Mt. Vernon Elementary named School of Excellence

Hall County School System’s Mount Vernon Elementary School was recently selected a School of Excellence by the State of Georgia Board of Education.

Each of the state’s congressional districts is eligible to submit one school as an applicant for the distinguished award. The chosen school submits an application that takes some four to six months to complete.

The state then sends a team to the school to validate the application information and confirm eligibility on criteria ranging from the school’s community involvement to test scores. With a total of 1,100 elementary schools in Georgia, Mt. Vernon was one of only eight elementary schools chosen this year.

Mt. Vernon Elementary opened in 1993 with 560 students. Today, Principal Wayne Colston oversees a staff of 84 and 700 students at the school located on Jim Hood Road in North Hall County. 770-983-1759.
