A report by AARP (American Association for Retired People) in USA Today in July 2011 named Gainesville as one of the five most affordable places to retire.

The article highlights places that are economical for retirees with quality lifestyle. Criteria included not only property- and sales-tax rates, median housing price, and cost of living but also the tax rate on pensions and Social Security, along with recreation, climate, and arts and culture.

According to the article in USA TODAY, Gainesville’s median housing price is $141,800 and says the best way to spend $10 is to eat at Recess Southern Gastro Pub on the square then check out downtown events, including free concerts.
