Gainesville, GA – January 16, 2008: The Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce Beautification Committee announces winners of the 2008 Arbor Day Art Contest. First Place winner is Laila Hasnain, Mt. Vernon Elementary School. Runner ups are Javy Euyoque, Dean Myers Elementary School, and Oscar Contreras, McEver Elementary School.

The art contest was open to all 5th graders in elementary schools in the Gainesville and Hall County. Students from 12 schools participated in the contest including Mt. Vernon Elementary, Dean Myers Elementary, McEver Elementary, Gainesville Exploration Academy, New Holland Elementary, Sugar Hill Elementary, Fair Street Elementary, Riverbend Elementary, Chicopee Woods Elementary, Lakeview Academy, Chestnut Mountain Elementary and White Sulphur Elementary.

This will be an annual event for 5th graders and was the first year the Greater Hall Chamber teamed up with the Georgia Forestry Commission for the contest. “Trees are Terrific, Inside and Out” was the theme of this year’s contest, and the artwork submitted was in many different mediums, including posters, pottery, and sculpture.

Cash prizes were donated by Keep Hall Beautiful and Georgia Power Company, and awards will be given on Arbor Day, February 15 at 10am the Northeast Georgia History Center. The three area winners along with school-selected winners will be forwarded to the National Arbor Association for a national contest.
